A member of the security team speaking to a person in distress.

Sometimes you might find yourself in a situation where you need assistance.

There may be times when you are in need of assistance that is not of an emergency nature. These situations do not pose an immediate threat to you, others or property, but are valid security matters that require immediate support. Our team is available to assist you anywhere on campus, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What are some instances where I may need TMU Security?

You may want to call TMU Security if you are in a situation that does not pose an immediate threat to you, others or property. In these instances, your situation is a valid security matter but does not require immediate attention.

Examples of when you may need to reach Security directly, including:

  • reporting a crime that does not pose an immediate safety risk (e.g. theft, graffiti and vandalism, etc.);
  • reporting an incident that has already occurred (e.g. assault or harassment, etc.)
  • reporting a noise complaint;
  • power outage or utility failure; and/or
  • a non-emergency medical situation (i.e. a twisted ankle).

If you are ever in doubt of whether a situation is an emergency, you should call 911. It's better to be safe and let the dispatcher determine if you need emergency assistance.

Medical situations that are not emergencies

Many medical situations are commonly misclassified as emergencies, when in fact, they do not meet the criteria of an emergency.

A non-emergency medical issue are medical conditions that are not life-threatening , but still require medical care within 24 hours. These types of conditions can be cared for at walk-in clinics or hospitals.

What to do

  • stay calm and call Security and Emergency Services at 416-979-5040
  • stay on the phone to follow instructions

If you are a bystander

If you are a bystander, provide first aid until the arrival of medical response if you have training. Stay with the injured or ill person until help arrives if you are able to do so.

Reporting after the fact

If while on campus you were in an incident or an injury has occurred, no matter the severity, it must be reported. Even if a situation seems insignificant, it can lead to more severe outcomes overtime. Please inform us.
