Dr. Remi Warner, Director, Human Rights Services

Human Rights Services is one of the units that make up the Office of the Vice-President, Equity and Community Inclusion (OVPECI). Led by Dr. Remi Warner, the unit works to safeguard the human rights of all Toronto Met community members by ensuring that there is a fair process in which concerns and complaint resolutions related to human rights and sexual violence are heard.

What we do

We work with members of the Toronto Met community to ensure a study, work and living environment free of discrimination and harassment. Our services are free and confidential to Toronto Met community members including students, faculty and staff. We advocate for a community where the dignity of all members is respected and upheld. Our overall goal is to foster a human rights-centred campus culture and to meet the university’s values of equity, diversity and inclusion.

We can help you respond to human rights concerns

The Human Rights Services team can offer consultation, coaching, and information about options that may be available to you as it relates to human rights concerns. If you choose to file a complaint, we can guide you through the process. Besides handling investigations, we also consult and provide alternate forms of resolution.

In particular, you can turn to us for:

free and confidential complaint resolution services for issues related to human rights and sexual violence
information about the options available to address human rights concerns through consultation, conciliation and investigation
referrals to the appropriate services when a complaint does not fall under our jurisdiction
connecting you with supports on matters involving sexual violence
conciliation through mediation when parties involved agree that an alternate resolution is possible and preferable to an investigation

We also provide educational opportunities through workshops, seminars and presentations to promote awareness of human rights issues, the law and the rights and responsibilities of all members of the Toronto Met community.

About Remi

Before starting his role as Director of Human Rights Services at Toronto Met in January 2021, Dr. Warner previously held senior roles within various educational and public service spheres, including the Ontario Human Rights Commission, the Ontario Public Service Cabinet Office, and the Toronto District School Board (TDSB).

Most recently, in his position as senior manager for the TDSB’s Human Rights Office, Dr. Warner oversaw the complaint resolution process, designed and delivered human rights education, and developed a greater focus on proactive, systemic human rights promotion. He has also expanded the TDSB’s human rights data collection, analysis and reporting capacity, and outreach and engagement.

Through his former role as manager of the Anti-Racism Directorate (ARD) at the Cabinet Office, Dr. Warner led the development of the Ontario Government’s PDF file A Better Way Forward: Ontario’s 3-Year Anti-Racism Strategic Plan , external link . He has also played a lead role in both drafting Ontario’s 2017 Anti-Racism Act, the first anti-racism legislation of its kind; and in developing Ontario’s Data Standards for the Identification and Monitoring of Systemic Racism.
