Bring your creativity to life - creating robots, wearables, interactive videos, games, kinetic sculptures and art installations. Access creative technology and cutting-edge facilities like the Makerspace, Fab Lab, and the Transmedia Zone, an incubator for storytelling and creative entrepreneurship. Connect with global creators and tap into the industry through collaborations with TIFF Bell Lightbox, the Ontario Science Centre and more. Gain global perspectives through boot camps in Los Angeles and New York.

*Actual minimum grade ranges required for fall 2023 admission/wait list consideration will be determined based on grades and qualifications presented by the applicant pool as they become available. Required grade ranges may fluctuate from year to year (up or down) as a result of competition. Applicants not educated in Ontario may present the equivalent of the Ontario requirements. TMU reserves the right to determine equivalency at its sole discretion.

Academic Requirements

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent with a minimum of six Grade 12 U or M courses including the following program specific requirements.

Typically, a minimum overall average of 70% establishes eligibility for admission consideration; subject to competition individual programs may require higher prerequisite grades and/or higher overall averages:

  • A minimum grade of 70% or higher will be required in Grade 12 U English/anglais (ENG4U/EAE4U preferred).

Non-Academic Requirements

In addition to meeting competitive academic requirements, you are required to submit the following non-academic requirements. Your ability to follow and adhere to the requirements is part of the assessment of your application. 

 Your non-academic requirements are due by February 1, 2022 or 10 business days from your application submission date, whichever comes later.

Prepare a current resumé/curriculum vitae highlighting education, work experience, volunteer experience, and extracurricular activities. 

 Please save your resumé as a .pdf file.

Part 1

Visit the New Media website  our Instagram feed , external link, opens in new window . Write a one-page statement that expresses why you want to be part of the New Media program and discuss your interest in media art and technology as a creative maker.

Part 2

Write a one-page statement about something awesome. Anything! This could be skateboarding, chocolate chip cookies, why you make art, why the cake is a lie, birds, clouds and their amazing ephemeral shapes, the color aubergine, Samus Aran, your favourite poet, artist or artwork, squirrels, strong winds, tall hats, why you love to code, Tom Nook, puppets, the joy and frustration of 3D-printing, or something else entirely.

Humans have different writing styles and processes. An approach to writing that you may find useful is voice typing. That’s correct! If you are a storyteller, and are able to articulate your ideas with your voice more effectively than your fingers, this approach might be for you!

We want to get to know your creative side. To do this we would like you to prepare a single portfolio PDF that introduces us to three examples of your own creative work and/or collaborations. These works should demonstrate your passion, potential, and ability to communicate ideas.

We will consider any works in any medium. These can include: code-based projects, digital fabrication or design, games you have made, creations in virtual worlds (eg. Minecraft), sock puppets, digital images and/or photos, videos, recordings of performances (artistic, theatrical, musical), personal writings, drawings, paintings, OR any other materials you feel will help us understand you as a creative individual.

The faculty will review your creative work to try and understand you as a future New Media student. At this stage, we are looking for imagination and passion — not production value and polish.

How to Format Your Portfolio 

As indicated above, we would like you to submit your portfolio as a single PDF

For works that can be represented with still images , they should simply be embedded in your PDF.

For video or audio works, please provide a link to your content hosted online (e.g. Google Drive, YouTube, Vimeo, Soundcloud, etc.)  If the content is private, make sure to include passwords, or make the content public.

For material works (e.g. sculptural objects or 3D prints), interactive designs and experiences, wearable art, robotic/electronic exploration, projects involving code, video games, virtual worlds, web pages and all other works that don't fit neatly into the media categories above, you may submit videos and/or still documentation (linked or embedded as described above).  

Pro Tip: Stills or Videos? If you want to share something that moves, interacts or behaves (games, bots, etc.) find a way to capture the work in motion; use a screen recording or video. If it stands still, doesn't move or is framed (e.g. an illustration, drawing, papier-mâché mask), capture it with still image(s) that reveal the whole work and details. Multiple views of the same object are acceptable for static 3D works.

For all time-based works (video, sound, performance materials) we will view up to three minutes each.  We will start viewing at the beginning unless an alternate start time is provided. For longer works, provide a shorter, edited version. 

For each work , we ask that you add a bit of context. This can be in point form — not an essay. Please include: 

  • Title of work
  • The date of its completion
  • If you were the sole creator or a collaborator.  If you were a collaborator or part of a team project, briefly describe your contribution (e.g. editor, sounds, lighting, digital design, coder, front end, whatever it was).
  • Indicate if this was a homework assignment or a personal project
  • Tell us the idea behind the work — what were you thinking about, what inspired or drove you to make the work, why did you pick this piece?

The non-academic requirements assessment fee is  $50 CDN  and must be paid in order for your submission to be reviewed. Here’s how to pay:

  1. Access your ChooseTMU Applicant Portal account (instructions to access the portal can be found below under  Submission Instructions ).

  2. Click on the button to link to the  eForms Centre .

Applicants are required to submit all components of their non-academic requirements via the ChooseTMU Applicant Portal .

Applicants unable to use the ChooseTMU Applicant Portal are required to contact the RTA School of Media at to discuss an alternate method of submission. Due to the volume of applications received and our system performance, we strongly encourage you to submit your documents well in advance of the noted deadlines.

Here’s how to access your ChooseTMU Applicant Portal account:

  1. Get your TMU Student Number in the email acknowledgement of your application
  2. Activate your TMU Online Identity. Fill in the Activation Form on the Accounts website. When asked for your Student/Applicant ID, enter your nine-digit TMU Student Number. Keep a record of your user name and password
  3. 24 hours after activating your TMU Online Identity, visit the ChooseTMU Applicant Portal

If you are applying for readmission or reinstatement, you are not required to submit non-academic requirements. You must inform the program department of your intentions.

 Email the RTA School of Media at by February 1, 2022, or 10 business days from your application submission date (whichever comes later).

After Graduation

Design interactive media and develop a creative voice to define and generate the future of media art and technology: apps or data visualizations; audio production, user experience design or social media marketing; artwork exhibition; or web, gaming and mobile development. You may work as a UX designer, producer, product designer, social media specialist, or content designer. Or, pursue graduate studies in communication, interactive arts or inclusive design.
